Venus Open champion Happy Robert took advantage of Mayombo Open deposed king Ronald Otile’s absence to clinch the annual event in honour of former Defence Permanent Secretary Brigadier Noble Mayombo.
Otile, together with his U-19 national teammates Denis Otim and Daniel Baguma, could not make it in time for the tourney played at the par-70 Tooro Golf Club course on Saturday after returning from the All Africa Golf Challenge in Zambia, where Uganda finished fifth.
Happy, the Kilembe Mines golfer, edged Rugumayo by two strokes after hitting 73 in gross on a day no one scored under at the par-70 course. “The conditions were poor (wet),” said Tooro Club captain Tonny Othieno, whose 74 strokes left him trailing Fred Bazirake by 4 in Group B, “The greens were too fast for us and we couldn’t the flight of the ball.”
On a day Tooro commemorated Mayombo’s life, the seventh edition of the annual event also saw 12 former Tooro Club trustees honoured, as well as Edson Kiraso, the first black Tooro Club president, and Mzee Emmanuel Basaliza Apuuli, who were also inducted as life members.
