KAMPALA. Being a university side, the prospect of losing your best players each season is a fear many institutions taking part in sport learn to deal with.
But with the impending 2017 basketball season proving the exception for UCU Canons, coach Nicholas Natuhereza is hoping for better fortunes.
Unlike last season when he lost Ivan Lumanyika and Desmond Owili, the Mukono university side maintained the core of the team that competed but ultimately came up short against champions City Oilers in the semifinals.

“Yeah, we should be a little better I believe. Some returning players that shouldd be much improved,” he stated yesterday after watching both his male and female sides clinch the season opening UCU open on Sunday. The Canons after ejecting Betway Power in the semifinal, overrun the Pemba Warriors 74-57 in the final with Brian Namake and Steven Wundi later picking up the MVP and topscorer accolades.
It was a lot tighter for champions UCU Lady Canons who edged perennial rivals KCCA Leopards 46-43 on the back of Vilma Achieng’s MVP exploits.

“I am just glad we got the teams and some new players some action. This is however not enough to predict what the season will be like but it’s not a bad start,” he said of the victories.
