KAMPALA.

Often times in Ugandan sport, there is animosity when players opt to make transfers from one club to another.
Even in instances where there is no bitterness, it is often unlikely that the club with which a player is severing ties, offers any sort of appreciation.

On Tuesday evening at a private function in Bugolobi however, the situation was different as City Oilers organized a farewell dinner for the departing Kami Kabange.

This is after the centre ended his four year relationship with the City Oilers by sealing a move back home to Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Basketball Club.

“As a club we do not stand in the way of the progress of our players. Even though Kami in October only signed a contract with us up to 2018, he told us he had got a good offer and we could not match it,” revealed Muhammed Santur the Oilers manager while making reference to Samuel Kalwanyi. The centre also left the four time champions after earning a scholarship in the US at the start of last season.

Described by Ben Komakech as “the first skilled big man he’s played alongside” and with a jumpshot as good as a layup by other teammates, Kabange leaves the Oilers on a high.

Last week he helped the club seal a fourth consecutive league title in addition to the Zone V championship and a maiden appearance at the Fiba Africa Club Championship.

“Once an Oiler, always an Oiler, I leave both as a better player and a better human being,” stated Kabange in his parting remarks. Kabange also won two playoff MVP awards and averaged 15 points per game in this year’s final.
