Power-full test for wounded UCU Canons

Kampala- UCU Canons are fast losing track with the big boys in this season’s Airtel National Basketball League title.

After going down 64-59 to university rivals KIU Titans on Wednesday, UCU fans have every reason to worry that their team won’t mount a serious challenge for the title.

The loss, in addition to the earlier 64-56 defeat to City Oilers, means coach Nick Natuhereza’s side have only beaten Falcons among the top teams with genuine title ambitions.

The latest defeat though gave the impression that can still match the top sides if they plug in a few holes. The Canons pulled to within one (60-59) with under a minute courtesy of a deep three from Fadhili Chuma.

It was Yahaya Kalyesubula’s 17 points though that kept them afloat after a 14-3 run at the start of the third quarter gave KIU a 44-36 lead going into the fourth.

Geoffrey Soro scored 18 points and Chris Omanye added 17 to help the Titans improve to 9-1 this season. UCU’s opponents today are, meanwhile, coming off a 79-66 win over Falcons, one of their most impressive displays since ex-UCU Canon Robert Mugabe took over as coach at the start of the year.

Today’s attention though is likely to focus on guard Sudi Ulanga, who spent four seasons at UCU before moving on at the start of this season.
“It will be tough playing them because they know my game but I will obviously try and do my best,” Ulanga said.

Canons desperately need a win over Power today to reassure their fans that they are not bound for mid-table.
