Power punish sluggish UCU

Same old sad song. The recurrent cries of under-funding or no support to national teams for international competition defeat government’s insistence that it supports sport in Uganda. The basketball federation is in dire need of just Shs274m. PHOTO BY ISMAIL KEZAALA

Kampala. For long periods on Friday at the Lugogo Arena, UCU Canons appeared to have done enough to not only leapfrog their opponents Power but also jump two places into third on the National Basketball League log.
Instead, they conspired to lose 66-72 as Power improved to 15-4 and moved third on the 12-team table with three games left in the end regular season. Trailing 17-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Fiba Africa Zone V-bound Canons leveled the scores at 25 points going into the third and led by four at the start of the final quarter.
Five minutes though is a very long time in basketball. Power, led by Fahmy Sebatindira, fought back with the guard scoring nine of his 12 points in the final period for an unlikely victory.
“It is a bit embarrassing,’ admitted UCU Canons coach Nick Natuhereza. Jonathan Egau and Steven Wundi led with 18 points apiece for his side but were ultimately upstaged by Power for whom Paul Odong and Michael Makiadi led with 14 and 13 points respectively.
