What you need to know:

  • Basketball. UCU Lady Canons yesterday defeated Rwanda’s APR 88-50 to make it four straight wins ahead of their clash with Kenyan powerhouse Equity Bank today. KCCA Leopards face defending champions KPA.

KAMPALA. UCU Lady Canons won their opening four games at the Fiba Africa Zone V tournament held in Tanzania last year before faltering at the final bend.
Yesterday, they equaled that start at the ongoing tournament with another emphatic 88-50 win this time over Rwanda’s APR.
After a tight opening quarter which they edged 22-18, the Lady Canons pulled away in the subsequent period with a 23-8 run.
They closed out the game with another 28-8 sequence as Judith Nansobya and Vilma Achieng top scored with 19 and 18 points respectively.
While they faltered against supposedly weaker opposition last year, their credentials will this time be tested by championship contenders starting with a clash against Equity Bank.
Like the Canons, the Kenyan side is also unbeaten in four games including a 56-51 win over Uganda’s KCCA Leopards on Monday.
The latter have since made a strong recovery and improved to a 3-1 record following yesterday’s 91-39 thrashing of Tanzania’s Don Bosco.
Maureen Amoding who dropped 39 points in the 139-35 blowout win over Somalia’s Horseed had 11 in this one with Martha Soigi leading with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
They play the champions KPA before wrapping up the tournament with a fixture against domestic rivals UCU.
Similarly, current Zonal title holders Equity will play their Kenyan counterparts KPA on the final day.
The men’s semifinal action promises to be equally as exciting with Rwanda’s Patriots the first men’s side to progress following a 68-50 win over Tanzania’s ABC.
They are likely to face off with Betway Power who were due to play winless Hawassa and were also thrashed 111-41 by reigning champions City Oilers on Monday.
Oilers too had a seemingly easy quarterfinal match up with another Somali side Gondar City as they await the winner between KPA and Savio.
