Uganda’s Fide Master (FM) Harold Wanyama is well positioned to win a big chunck of the $27, 000 (about Shs74m) top prize at the ongoing Africa Individual Chess Championship in Windhoek, Namibia.

Wanyama went into his clash with Namibian Daniel Jere last night lying joint second in the standings. Three other players including Grand Master Adly Ahmed share the position with Wanyama at three points out of a possible four.
Egyptian International Master Farahat Ali is the current standings leader at four points.

The Ugandan drew with South African Van Den Heever Donovan on Tuesday to maintain an unbeaten run in the tournament that started last Saturday.

In the earlier rounds, Wanyama had defeated Togo’s Fumey Enyonam and Calvin Klaasen and drew with another South African Ken Solomon.

The 30-year-old, who has represented Uganda at three World Chess Olympiads (2010, 2012, 2014), is likely to have a beautiful festive season if he seals his place among the top eight performers as decent cash prizes are on offer. The winner will take home Shs15m with the second bagging around Shs10m in Africa’s biggest tournament.
