Bombers raid Congo Brazzaville with confidence

KAMPALA. Uganda’s national boxing team, the Bombers has been flagged off this morning at Lugogo Sports Complex ahead of the AFBC African Confederation Boxing Championships.
Seven of the possible 10 boxers and four coaches were cleared for the Friday (June 16, 2017) morning trip to Brazzaville, Congo for Africa’s most prestigious amateur boxing tournament.
Uganda Boxing Federation spokesman, Fred Kavuma, said the other three boxers could be cleared to join their teammates in Brazzaville if their ticket and accommodation fees issues are sorted before the general tournament weigh-in on Saturday morning.

Boxers and head coach Muhammad Hassan Mulandi concur that the team is in good shape after two months of preparations at Lugogo.
“The coaches have done their best and it’s our turn to reward them with victory and I hope we shall, Inshallah,” captain Musa Shadir, 20, said.
The top four in each weight category qualify for Aiba World Boxing Championships in Hamburg, Germany.
Godfrey Nyakana, an Auckland 1990 Commonwealth Gold medallist, set lofty targets: “We want at least six boxers to qualify for Germany.”
