Bweyogerere, Kololo impress in Schools Boxing Championships

KAMPALA. Favourites and defending champions, Bweyogerere High School, started off decently in the ongoing National Schools Boxing Championships at Patidar Samaj Hotel among the nine schools that graced this year’s event.
The three –day event, that started on Wednesday, saw Arafat Kigozi in bantam weight category defeat Arafisa Kyagulanyi of Buloba Christian School on RSC and Paul Olowo (fly weight) beating Hassan Bravo of Nsangi SSS on points, only for Bweyogerere to be disappointed by Jamil Kakaire (Light weight) who lost on points to Nankulabye’s Davis Laku.
Meanwhile the Kololo SSS duo of, Najib Oundo (welter weight) and Sulaiman Kigundu (Light weight) defeated Kol Asiku of Margret SSS and Aziz Abaala of Nsangi respectively. Coaches appraised the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) for organizing yet a powerful event after a period of slumber in boxing activities as one Godfrey Basudde from Mukono SSS said, “We have all been eager waiting for this opportunity, thanks to UBF who have made it possible.”

Intermediates
Meanwhile Moses Muhangi, the president UBF, said that they are going to embark on preparing National Intermediates Championships immediately after this event. “We expect more schools to come and be part of this next time, however we are also preparing National Intermediates which are going to be in various venues including Kawempe, Bwaise and Nakulabye.”
Muhangi argues that taking boxing away from MTN Arena –Lugogo- the usual venue helps to extend boxing to communities where supporters are.
