Cobap, East Coast in two horse race
Community Based Aids Programs (Cobap) will face stiff competition from Naguru-based East Coast Boxing Club for top honours as the four-day National Junior Boxing Championship climaxes at Centenary Park in Kampala today.
Cobap, who took an early lead with 25 points on Thursday, are prime favourites with 13 pugilists in the finals compared to East Coast’s nine in the 11 categories that are to be contested.
A total of 76 pugilists will participate in the scheduled 38 bouts that are on card in on the final day.
Bombers’ coach Charles Lubulwa is optimistic that although the youngsters have not exhibited high levels of boxing basics, there is room for improvement.
“Many of them only care about beating the opponent,” he told Sunday Monitor. “They are not taught the basics of studying opponents and how to peg them down. But being a beginners’ competition, you expect that and I have hope they will mature.”
