KAMPALA.

After a successful national open boxing championship, the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) have now embarked on training the national team that will represent Uganda in different international competitions.

The bombers are preparing for the forthcoming All Africa Games and African Boxing Championships with both competitions - set for September in Congo Brazzaville and Morocco respectively - to act as qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Over 130 male and female boxers started non-residential training sessions twice a week at Lugogo late last month with the first trials to pick out the best scheduled for tomorrow.

Intense sessions
“The turn-up is overwhelming and the boys and girls are focused on making the final team though we have to cut the number,” explained Paul Ayiasi, the UBF Organizing Secretary.

Preparations for the Commonwealth Youth Games team are also underway with the boys and girls teams in intense sessions for the competition to be staged in Scotland in September.

Meanwhile, five national team pugilists, Fazil Juma Kaggwa (light flyweight) and Mike Sekabembe (super heavyweight), Rogers Ssemitala (flyweight), Nasir Bashir (bantamweight) and Nasser Bukenya (welterweight) will pitch camp in South Africa for two weeks of special training.

Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) together with their South African counterparts recommended the five.
