MITYANA. If what happened at the Gombolola Grounds on Sunday night is anything to go by; combat sports, particularly boxing, will take root and give Mityana sports fanatics an alternative to football.

Seven karate matches curtain raised the event as fighters showcased different skills testament to what Moses Golola - proprietor of the Golola talent search drive - reiterates that “the talent search is not only about boxing.”
John Garang from Wobulenzi was among the highlights, as his mastery technically knocked out Mityana’s Dalton Muwanguzi in the first round. Mubende’s Deus Ssenyonjo, also a Golola protégé, beat Mityana’s Thomas Mugalula before Hussein Kiwoko gave home fans a reason to smile by knocking out Willy Balikowa in the first round. Most of the boxers in the 12 amateur under cards could not jab, guard or throw body shots - they all aimed for the head - but considering they begun boxing hardly a month ago, it is a bright start. After beating Kenyan Jackson Wainaina, by unanimous decision, Golola danced to celebrate to the success of the event.

“I greatly thank God and everybody; all Mityana fans, my sponsors Fran Horizons, Rock Boom, promoters and whoever has made this happen,” said a jovial Golola. “I told you this isn’t a joke and it’s a good beginning. With you, boxing shall grow in Mityana and no weapon shall be raised against us.”
Godfrey Kiwanda, Mityana North MP praised Golola’s efforts and vowed to support the cause. “I am honoured to be part of this cause. I shall lobby everywhere in a bid to fully support this effort,” he said.
