Just like many other boxers, Abdu Hassan is returning from a long period of inactivity. A national team boxer in 2007, Hassan had not seen the inside of the ring for a long time owing to administrative wrangles that kept all amateur boxers away from action. But with some sanity returning to the sport, the 25-year-old is now delighted to be back in the ring.

On Day Three of the National Ope Boxing Championship at Lugogo yesterday, Hassan showed his determination to get back his national team place by outclassing KBC’s Saddam Serwadda yesterday.

Both boxers displayed a classic show amidst cheers from the crowd but it was Uganda Peoples Defence Forces’ (UPDF) Hassan who out scored Serwadda with a unanimous 3-0 decision from the judges.

With the tournament entering the business end, Hassan wants to come out on top and get an automatic ticket to the Commonwealth Games due July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland. “Everyone’s dream is to make the national team (The Bombers),” Hassan said after his win. Only five boxers are travelling for the Commonwealth Games.
