KAMPALA- Kickboxing officials (umpires, referees and judges) have promised to improve their officiating after undergoing a two-day training at Power Flex Gym in Mengo.

Charles Mugoya, an experienced umpire welcomed the training saying the sport will have fewer controversies since many of them have dogged the sport’s progress in the past. Despite spending decades in the sport as a trainer, umpire and judge, Mugoya acknowledged that he did not know the difference between some of the fighting formats and even awarding of points.

“We have been getting international matches but it has always been the same faces that have been officiating but with such training, we will be able to get new people to take over from us,” the aging Mugoya told Daily Monitor.

Knowledge into practice
The trained officials hope to put their knowledge in practice when the national kick boxing league commences on March on 25 in Bombo.

Uganda Kickboxing Federation head of technical Patrick Liyoza, who facilitated this training, said they will continue having such refresher courses.

The 11 referee and judges that took part include Charles Mugoya, Musa Mwesigye, Julius Okiring, Henry Walusimbi, Timothy Twinomugisha, Simon Peter Kalema, Michael Lutaaya, Peter Kizito, Allan Molo, Isaac Kato and Abbey Kigozi.
