In Summary
Kevin Apio takes over the reins as Wanderers captain from retired national team wicket-keeper Mary Nanderenga. “Its a new beginning,” Apio said ahead of the opener.
From newly initiated entrants in Jinja-based Hope Toun Rangers Cricket Club, there are so many new things to be keenly looked when the women season gets underway today.
Defending champions Charity Trust Fund and last year’s runners-up Wanderers will have new skippers when the two lock horns in the only fixture on the opening day of the National League at Lugogo Oval this morning. The cricket league will be played under the 50-over format.
Kevin Apio takes over the reins as Wanderers captain from retired national team wicket-keeper Mary Nanderenga. “Its a new beginning,” Apio said ahead of the opener. “The team wants to win something this year.”
Wanderers’ bowling unit will miss Miriam Lumonya owing to a tight work schedule but with Apio, Nanderenga, Rebecca Akwenyu and national team captain Naomi Kayondo in the batting, they aim to start on a high.
Just like Apio, Scovia Akello takes over Charity’s dressing room business from Flavia Laker.
“We start as titleholders and we want to keep the same status till the end,” Akello said.
Charity are chasing a third straight title and perhaps another season double.
