KAMPALA.
Claiming a third straight title would bring a lot more ecstasy to any winning side. But Jinja SS didn’t have any ‘over-the-top’ celebrations after they defeated Kololo SS by seven wickets to retain the Pepsi Girls’ Cricket Week title on Monday evening.

“We came here knowing we would win,” said Jinja SS skipper Claire Mushakamba. “Our dream is to play at the 2015 ICC Women’s World Cup and that’s what keeps driving us to better our individual games.” When Kololo opted to bat first in the final, Jinja’s Patricia Busingye (3/8), Racheal Ntono (2/3) and Prico Nakitende (2/8) restricted them to 59 for 9.

With the score looking defendable, opener Damalie Busingye struck three fours in a 40-ball 26 to wrest the game back in Jinja SS favour. Immaculate Nakisuyi hit the final nail in Kololo’s coffin when, with three runs required, she launched the tournament’s only six over long on to ensure the holders won with 20 balls to spare.

Elsewhere Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) continued with their mission to regain their lost glory. UCA broke the tradition of naming foreigners as head coaches by appointing Davis Turinawe as the senior men’s tactician yesterday.

The 37-year-old takes over from South African Johan Rudolph whose contracted wasn’t renewed.
“He is very knowledgeable and knows all the players. Above all has good man management skills,” CEO Justine Ligyalingi said about Turinawe.
