What you need to know:

Cricket. There are now 10 centuries in the history of women’s cricket in Uganda, of which seven have been scored this year. KICC pair of Flavia Laker and Naome Kayondo have notched two apiece

Kampala.

Naome Kayondo poured cold water on suggestions that she was enduring a lean patch with the bat on Saturday.
She scored a quick-fire unbeaten century of 108 runs off 67 balls as Kampala Institute of Cricket Clubs (KICC) defeated Ndejje-Premier by 185 runs in Budo to go top of the National Women’s 40-Over League table with 66 points.

“It always feels nice to score a century,” Kayondo told Daily Monitor after becoming the seventh different centurion of the season.

“It is also quite interesting that many of us are getting 100s now. My prayer is that we can still get them in the national team jerseys,” added the Lady Cricket Cranes skipper. Her solo effort ensured they are now four points ahead of KICC after 12 outings.

KICC can now win the title if they beat Tornado B and Jinja SS in their remaining fixtures.
In addition to her 91-ball 119 century while playing for Wanderers against JACC last year, Kayondo became only the second female player in Ugandan cricket to notch more than one ton. The other lady to have recorded the same feat is KICC teammate Flavia Laker.

When the match was reduced to only 22 overs due to Ndejje’s late arrival, Kayondo increased the element of risk with 10 boundaries and five maximums. She shared an opening 165-run stand with Laker (46 off 37) for KICC to set 222-1 in 20.4 overs. Due to a rain interruption, the score was revised to 217 and Kayondo rubbed more salt into Ndejje’s wounds with an incisive spell of 4/1 as Ndejje folded for 32 in 12.1 overs.
Pioneer moved to 54 points from 11 matches to stay third.
