KAMPALA. One of the new ingredients at the second edition of the Singleton Golf Challenge was the instant tournament draw announced by Entebbe Golf Club captain Edwin Tumusiime.
Tumusiime announced a random yet quick draw for the thrilling match-play knockout event after 64 pairings made it out of a qualifying field of 213 players at the par-71 Entebbe course on Saturday.

Joint cut-off
With the cut-off at a joint 161 nett, the 19th Hole favourite pair of Kiryowa ‘K.K’ Kiwanuka and Elly ‘Sober’ Mukasa missed out.
“I had a bad day out and we missed the cut by six strokes,” Kiwanuka told Daily Monitor having carded 91 nett while playing off handicap 16 while Mukasa returned 76 nett off 12. However, this ‘hilarious’ pairing was entered into the main draw via a wild card, thanks to sponsors Singleton’s say.

“Our sponsors had four slots in the main draw of 64,” explained tournament director Innocent Kihika.
“K.K and Sober were included because they were the pair to beat in the first season plus they made it very entertaining,” reasoned Entebbe Golf Club vice chairman Oscar Semawere.

People’s favourites
That’s the favour one earns for being the people’s darling.
“But we were entered as a wild card (I think) owing to our performance last year,” Kiwanuka noted.
Last year, this combo earned a series of walk overs until they were beaten 3/2 (three-up with two holes to go) by Dan Kajungu and Collins Nuwagira at the semifinal stage.

Kiwanuka and Mukasa will face Yunus Baale and Raymond Mwesigwa in the first round on February 17.
“It is indeed another chance to go out enjoy ourselves but also prove our critics wrong, We shall give the entire field something to think about,” added Kiwanuka.

Isaac Mariera and John Muchiri won the title last year, winning a trip to watch the Open at the Royal Birkdale in England last July.
