KAMPALA.
The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) are in final stages of launching a T20 University Cricket League.

Cricket will become the third major sporting discipline after football and basketball to start a league of higher institutions of learning. The Nile Special University Football League (UFL) and Zuku University Basketball League (UBL) are already up and running, with the former in its third year and the latter in the inaugural.

A date for the launch is, however, dependent on the six universities UCA have identified to pioneer with agreeing on when they deem it right to start.

The said institutions include Makerere, Kyambogo, Uganda Christian University, Nkumba, Mubs and Uganda Martyrs, Nkozi. “Even if these universities agreed that we kick off in May, for us we are ready to go,” UCA CEO Justine Ligyalingi told the Daily Monitor on Monday.

“The good thing is we have been assured by the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) of sponsorship for this inaugural year.” Ligyalingi adds that as UCA, they will provide playing equipment and kit to each competing university plus prepare grounds, with the sponsorship taking care of prizes.

Uganda is hosting this year’s ACA Annual General Meeting (AGM), which takes place on April 12 in Kampala, and it is then the sponsorship is expected to be signed off. UCA have previously, through the university sports body Nusfu, organized T20s.
