When James Opoka woke up yesterday morning, a bright sunrise greeted his eyes. “It’s a nice view,” he told Margaret Opoka, his wife.
Little did Margaret know that those would be his husband’s farewell words as he breathed his last at 8:45am at Mulago Hospital.

He was 55. Opoka had been admitted at Mulago since last Thursday. He had gone six days without eating. Family members said the sports enthusiast died of kidney failure.

Margaret described Opoka as a loving man who worked so hard to make his children happy. “He loved sports so much especially football and rallying, he would give up everything for sports,” she said.

Opoka started working with Radio Uganda in 1977 before joining Uganda Television in 1985.

He started Tele Sports, a broadcasting company in 2005.
