It was all joy in the Wanderers camp after they defeated defending champions Charity Trust Fund by 47 runs at Lugogo Oval in the National Women’s 50-Over League opener on Saturday.
In contrast, frustration filled the Charity locker room as the defeat left them with lots to ponder on how they will defend the title. Charity skipper Scovia Akello won the toss and put in Wanderers to bat.
Wanderers were all out for 100 runs in 41.4 overs in an innings that produced 46 fielding extras.
Kevin Apio, Mary Nanderenga and Naomi Kayondo scored nine runs apiece for Wanderers. Charity’s batting failed to cover up for their fielding sins as they were bowled out for a paltry 53 runs in 19.5 overs.
“Charity failed to bowl well which aided us till the end,” Wanderers captain Apio said. Wanderers’ Merciline Adhiambo (4/14) won the Man-of-the-Match award.
