Uganda’s two representatives at this year’s Barclays Kenya Open; Deo Akope and Dennis Anguyo are hopeful they can edge into the money bracket by end of business today.
The youthful players showed signs of breaking Uganda’s duck at the European Challenge Tour event, which is the most prestigious in the region.
Akope led the way by shooting a near-perfect round of one-over-par 73 whereas Anguyo faltered after a fine start to finish with five-over-par 77 yesterday.
Akope made up for his two bogeys on the front nine with a birdie on the par-4 No.12 whereas Anguyo messed up a bogey-free front nine – which included two birdies on No.1 & 3 with an awful return of seven bogeys on No.10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 18.
“The field is tough,” said Akope after his round. “We have to continue playing the course and not thinking about the stars players. We are still strong.”
Elsewhere, a national amateur team of 20 that shall be joined by Phillip Kasozi and Henry Lujja was selected after a three-day 72-hole strokeplay qualifying exercise hosted by Uganda Golf Club and Entebbe Golf Club. Kasozi and Lujja were exempted from the trials as they are in Nairobi for the Kenya Open Pro Am.
