What you need to know:

  • Charles Mubiru and Solomon Kego were the first and second runners up in the men’s Group A, whose winner Mawejje will also enjoy dinner for two at Sheraton Hotel.

KAMPALA.

Morris Ashaba has not had a chance to represent his country at any international meet.

And it is not because he doesn’t make the grade. The 17-year-old relinquished his place to play for the national junior golf team during the All Africa Junior Golf Championships in Tunisia earlier this year because of academic obligations at Kololo Secondary School.

But Ashaba believes winning the eighth edition of the Multiple Industries-sponsored Kenya Day Golf Tournament last Saturday at Kitante will bring more fortune and luck for him. “It is one of the big tournaments and winning it makes me feel very proud,” Ashaba, who tallied 37 points to edge Joseph Mawejje (36) by one point, told Daily Monitor soon after receiving a glittering trophy and return air ticket to Mombasa courtesy of Kenya Airways.

“I am hoping I will play for the national team next year and also play better golf. I want to win a couple of more tournaments so that by the time this holiday ends I can play off handicap zero,” added the S.4 student who currently plays as a five-handicapper.

The tournament that attracted a record entry of 218 golfers , supported by Brand Kenya and was littered with a Kenya theme saw Sung Yi Hong collect 42 points to emerge the best lady on the day.

Sung will enjoy a weekend for two at the Lake Victoria Serena Hotel in Kigo and also play a round of golf at no cost. Kenya Ports, Master Power Systems, Kenya High Commission and Equity Bank also supported the tourney.
