A string of sponsors including Dasani, Bro Group, ICEA and Orange Uganda Limited have committed Shs45m to the biggest event on the Uganda Ladies Golf Union calendar.

Angel Eaton and Flavia Namakula were in agreement, yesterday, that the par-71 Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) course rather than any competitor will offer the biggest hurdle to anyone seeking this year’s title.
Tanzanian Eaton and Ugandan Namakula have been labelled as the top favourites for the annual 54-hole strokeplay championship that tees off tomorrow. “Entebbe can be a very difficult course,” said Namakula at the launch of the three-day 60th Uganda Ladies Amateur Open held at Uganda Golf Club.
“But I have practiced a lot for this edition and hopefully the recent rains will make it even easier to play.” Eaton, who is chasing her third title of the year after winning the Zimbabwe Amateur Strokeplay Championship and Coast Open, concurred that EGC would give her a whole new challenge.
“It is going to be my first time to play a tournament at Entebbe,” said the 23-year-old sensation, who is also the defending champion. “But I managed a round of nine holes when I arrived on Monday. It is long and it tests every golfer’s ability with each club. After I have done 18 holes, I will be able to know what I am capable of returning.”
Eaton was penciled in to play a full round with her main challenger Namakula yesterday afternoon.
During the launch, tournament director Agnes Konde unveiled a string of sponsors including Dasani, ICEA, Orange and Bro Group as the showpiece’s facilitators. “Our sponsors have offered Shs45m,” said Konde, who was flanked by Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU) president Esther Okullo, also a champion in 2003 and vice president Samalie Naikomba.
“We shall have two categories silver (handicap 0-17) and bronze (18-36) for the ladies where we expect 80 participants. “We have also introduced a caddies’ category and we expect the subsidiary group to attract at least 100 golfers.”
