Kampala. Bar 2015, Kenyan Dismas Indiza has been a consistent figure in the final day pressure group and he even didn’t feel any push as he won a record fifth Uganda Professionals Golf Open title in 13 tournament editions on Saturday.
Indiza’s triumph meant that it is now half-a-decade since a Ugandan won the most coveted prize in the paid ranks of golf here.
Since Vincent Byamukama in 2013, Indiza twice (also 2014), Zambian Muthiya Madalisto, South African Joshua Seale and Portuguese Stephen Ferreira have all basked in glory.
Denis Anguyo came close to ending that foreign dominance but even if it was a late fight, he emerged as the best Ugandan after tying fourth with counterpart Happy Robert with an aggregate score of 283 after four rounds. Uganda Golf Club’s (UGC) Anguyo got the edge after he carded a birdie on the par-5 18th green to return two-under 70 while Robert carded 74 on the final day.
That meant Anguyo won fully-paid sponsorship from GO Golf Uganda’s AJ Coetzee to feature at three Sunshine Tour events.
“I am happy with the performance,” the lanky Anguyo told Daily Monitor. “My drives and putts were on point and I was just pushing to make good scores. I honestly didn’t expect it this time as my game has been off for long time.”
Of the $50000 (Shs191m) purse, Anguyo pocketed Shs11.4m in prize money as Happy Robert. But it is now set to be double, thanks to former UGC captain and Makerere University’s engineering Prof. Anthony Kerali.
“Prof. Kerali had promised to sponsor me for the Uganda Open but then he travelled. I think that’s why he wants makeup for the disappointment,” a smiling Anguyo said.
