KAMPALA. In the aftermath of winning their first Africa Zone VI Championship title last Saturday, the celebrations for Team Uganda have not stopped. After checking out of Sheraton Hotel on Sunday morning the team shifted camp to Entebbe.
And playing golf hasn’t been on their menu, the name of the game is cooling off and toasting to a historic feat. But as the players proceed on their merry go-round, which will include meeting President Yoweri Museveni for a state dinner later this week, something is amiss.
The immediate orchestrators of their success are nowhere to be seen. The coach Amos Kamya, who could be mistaken to be one of the players because of his super man-managing skills, has been an ever-present figure. The Uganda Golf Union (UGU) members led by their president Kiryowa Kiwanuka, who goes by the moniker K.K, also gelled in well in the team’s dance routines.
But where are the caddies? The kit carriers, who also do the thankless job of plotting each shot with their masters, were last seen at the podium with the team on Saturday.
“We are lucky to have been picked by the players to caddy for them,” said Thomas Birungi of Entebbe, who caddied for Lawrence Muhenda.
“We have been treated and remunerated well. We have no complaints. My dream is also to play for Uganda and shake the President’s hand one day. May be the players will invite us along for the dinner.”
