Former Uganda Cranes and SC Villa midfielder continued to justify the notion sportsmen from other disciplines can attain victory in golf when he bagged 38 stableford points to win the Kenya Day event held to commemorate the country’s 49th Independence Anniversary.
The revived one-day tournament, last held in 2009, was held at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club, Kitante course on Friday.
“It has been a daily occurrence for me to win in my category but this is my first-ever major victory,” said the handicap 11 golfer, who captained SC Villa in 1985 and Cranes in 1987.
“This victory reminds of the times when the Harambee Stars used to come here on October 9 to celebrate with us our Independence Day and we used to reciprocate the visit on each of their annual anniversaries on December 12.” Mubiru also won a return air-ticket to Nairobi.
“I dedicate this victory to my wife Ashylene Mubiru. My intention is now to play off handicap 9 before the year ends,” added the 48-year-old engineer.
Shiella Kesiime took the overall ladies gong after returning 37 points to edge Brenda Ngabo (34) by three.
