ENTEBBE.

The pair of Kiryowa ‘K.K’ Kiwanuka and Elly ‘Sober’ Mukasa had already mastered the art of giving rousing victory speeches even before they played a single match.

Three walkovers left them as the envy of many a pair until last Saturday when they silenced their critics to book a place in the semifinals of the Singleton Matchplay Challenge due next month.

The demolished Raymond Kahigi and Ibrahim Bagalana 4-up with two holes to go at the par-71 Entebbe Golf Club course. “We were told we have been receiving walkovers so what we decided to do this morning is to walk over our opponents,” the ever-humourous KK told the 19th hole crowd.

“To Kahigi and Bagalana, we have nothing personal against them but we couldn’t give you the first class customer care because lots had been said that we are walkover masters.”

His partner Sober had his own version of the strategy the pair used on the day. “We decided to speak a language that both didn’t understand. So we chose Swahili,” said Mukasa as he sent the 19th hole into endless bouts of laughter. The pair later danced off stage to Koffie Olomide’s Ekotite.

They were literally through after par-3 Hole No.12 when they led 6-up with six holes to go. Playing off handicap 16, Kiwanuka produced immaculate golf of 71 nett that could have won him a prize on any day.

Yet for handicap 12 player Mukasa, knowing they had won after par-3 No.16, took 10 shots in attempt to win the longest drive on par-5 Hole No.18. He ended up with 77 nett.

K.K and Sober will face Dan Kajungu and Collins Nuwagira, who eliminated Moses Ssebugwawo and Emmanuel Mugabi 4/2.
The day also saw an end to Allan Muhereza and Moses Matsiko’s run after they surrendered to Kenyan duo of Isaac Mariera and John Muchiri 3/2.
