KAMPALA.

Sometimes, it is difficult to notice people’s true selves. But Annette Kiconco’s affable persona comes off easily in the way she carries herself around the golf club.

And true to her character, Kiconco received a roar of applause as she was crowned overall winner of the Uganda Golf Club’s (UGC) Lady Captain’s Prize showpiece last weekend.

Playing off handicap 20, Kiconco returned 72 nett and beat a field of over 245 players on countback at the customary annual ‘Thank You’ event for UGC Lady Captain Dr. Mary Ochieng.
“I am extremely excited,” accompanied by Irene Nakalembe at the podium, victorious Kiconco told the gathering at the 19th hole shortly after receiving the microphone from emcee Anne Abeja last Saturday.

“I thank the Lady Captain and the organisers. My lucky charm was Harriet Mbiro. She usually plays in the afternoon. But she was the first to tee-off at 7am. We had a lovely game with Mr. Mudumba (Dan) and the other gentleman we played with.”

“I putted really well and I dedicate the win to the team in the ‘Kirussia’ (at UGC where she normally seats),” said Kiconco, the head of SME Banking at Barclays Bank Kiconco in the aftermath of her second overall win in her five-year golfing career.

Nearly three years after she won the 2014 Captain’s Bell, Kiconco began with a double-bogey on par-4 Hole No.10, a triple-bogey on par-4 Hole No.15 and five other bogeys on Hole No.11, 12, 14, 15 and 18 in the morning rain.

She could only smile about pars on Holes No.13 and 17. But she gradually recovered on the front nine with a birdie on par-5 Hole No.1 and pars on Holes No.4, 6, 7 and 8 to win.
Kiconco took home a trophy alongside an assortment of prizes including a spar & gym voucher and two nights at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Kampala.

Others included a bottle of Baileys, a black golf Srixon bag and a business class ticket courtesy of South African Airways to Cape Town.

Like Kiconco, Dr.James Sekajugo was the men’s overall winner with a score of 67 nett.

“I didn’t really play very well,” said Dr Sekajugo. “I managed to win because of you. You managed to play little worse than I did.”

On the same evening, Dr. Ochieng announced she will serve one more term with a new assistant captain in Abeja.
