Golf. National amateur team star Peter Ssendawula, playing off handicap zero, won the coveted Nkata Memorial Trophy after firing 67 nett but the course launch gave more joy to members.
The golfing fraternity in Uganda was given an early Christmas present by the Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) committee as it officially unveiled the club’s new international design for their course.
The design was launched during the prize giving ceremony of the season-ending Orange Grand Mug of Mugs at the weekend.
The biggest features of the design are two water bodies with one of them being a major hazard on the course as it covers three holes. “The new design will maintain Entebbe as the longest course in the country with it
having three of the longest par-5s,” disclosed Innocent Kihika, the chairman EGC.
“The longest hole will be No.18 with 635 yards from the championship tee boxes. Upon completion of the course renovation, it will have a driving range, practice green area and a short game practice area that will have a
short fairway, green and bunkers.”
Kihika further revealed that the course will be built in accordance with United States Golf Association (USGA) standards and have a computerised irrigation system. “The design has cost the club $25,000 (an estimated
Shs66m). It was carried out by Golf Data, a renowned South African golf course design, construction and maintenance company who are the African representatives of Jack Nicklaus course design,” added Kihika.
Panteleo Kasangaki was crowned Entebbe champion after tallying 520 points at the end of 12 Mugs whereas Maxi Byenkya retained the Ladies Championship for the second year running with 900 points, 50 more than youthful Irene
Nakalembe.
