Ntege takes one-shot lead

Entebbe- Veteran Monica Ntege has a trophy cabin full of Uganda Ladies Amateur Open runner-up trophies. But she showed superb hunger in her umpteenth attempt to land a maiden title with a round of 78 to take a one-shot lead as the 60th edition teed off at Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) yesterday.
“I am still hopeful of winning the Uganda Open title one day,” Ntege often remarks whenever she conjures up a win at any corporate or club event hosted at her home club, Kitante.
Another dark horse Eva Magala played a round of intent to finish joint second along with Entebbe-based Irene Nakalembe and defending champion Angel Eaton of Tanzania. The three returned 79.
“I didn’t think I would be among the leaders,” said Magala, a five-handicapper. “I am overly surprised by my game and I hope to continue my quest of the leader.”
Flavia Namakula, Uganda’s main hope of wrestling the title from the foreign legion, endured a luckless day with a round of nine-over-par 80 to finish fifth.
“I struggled,” said the 26-year-old. “I am still adjusting to my new putter that I got from Nairobi. But I am sure I will step up in the remaining two rounds.”
