Kampala. For 21 years, the Kinyara Open Tournament has been a fixture on the local golfing menu.
This year’s edition, to be held on October 28-29 in Masindi, has received a Shs20m boost from UAP Old Mutual.
According to the organisers, close to 200 players are expected to grace the tournament, in ladies, amateur and professional categories.
The tournament promises twists and turns, if last year’s edition is anything to go by. The interesting bit about last year’s tournament was when Vincent Byamukama (Entebbe Golf Club) and Fred Wanzala (Palm Valley Golf Club) had to replay No. 1, 2, and 18 to finally decide the winner.
Also, Saidi Mawa from Jinja Golf Club sunk a hole-in-one at hole 7 to win Shs1.6m. Uganda Golf Club’s Joseph Mawejje won the amateurs title.
“Golf is more of a niche sport, and at UAP Old Mutual, we have a long term plan of developing sports. We believe that this relationship shall last,” said Dogo Singh Sherman, while handing over a dummy cheque to Kinyara’s Kirunda Magoola, at Liaison Uganda Limited offices in Kampala.
Professional players shall have a kitty of Shs10m to share amongst themselves, with other winners walking away with 32’ TV sets, vacuum cleaners, home appliances, markers and golf balls.
