KAMPALA. There is an aura of inevitability that the inaugural Kitante Open will throw a big spark into Uganda Golf Club (UGC).
The feeling was not far from that as the clubhouse showpiece was launched at UGC in Kitante yesterday morning.

“We are still the premier golf club in Uganda and we have brought a premier showpiece,” UGC captain Joseph Bagabo told Daily Monitor.

This is the first of a kind at Kitante following years of the causal Monthly Mug competitions.
“We have never had this. All other clubs have Open tournaments except us,” said Arthur Kiwanuka, the UGC competitions’ secretary.

To back up his words, Bagabo in company of Kiwanuka and UGC Lady Captain Dr Mary Ochieng unveiled a catalogue of sponsors for the two-day event which tees-off on Friday at the par-72 course.

Telecommunication company Airtel offered Shs10m package for the event which will also accommodate youngsters below 12 years.

“When Airtel was engaged, we came on board,” stated Airtel’s head of branding and communications Remmy Kisakye.

“Beyond our CSR, we are trying to promote talent beyond the current crop of golfers. We love to promote talent from the grass roots and be able identify the unsung heroes.”

Meanwhile, Kia Motors have offered a brand new Kia Serento for whoever bags a hole-in-one at the par-3 Hole No.11 while Liberty Insurance, Pepsi and Bollore Logistics are also on board.

“Our sponsors bring in the excitement that all amateur golfers will be looking for. We hope the two days bring the fraternity together.” Bagabo remarked.

More than 170 players are expected to take part but professionals are not catered for.
