Uganda became only the third country to lift the Africa Zone VI Golf Championship trophy.

The hosts edged South Africa by one point to win the 21st edition at the par-72 Kitante course yesterday.

South Africa are the record champions with 19 titles whereas Kenya halted the Rainbow Nation’s 100 percent run in Mombasa 2010. Uganda, who were joint leaders with South Africa for the first two days, pulled clear thanks to a final day tally of six points in the singles round. South Africa managed five and paid the price of Teagan Gauche being disqualified.

Uganda captain Adolf Muhumuza brought home Uganda’s first point of the day when he made light work of Kenya’s Nelson Simwa (3 & 2) and it was long-hitting debutant Martin Ochaya who sealed off the fairytale run by demolishing Namibia’s Gabriel Shikodi (5 & 3) at the 15th hole to send the packed gallery into a frenzy.
