Veteran golfer Zaramba rings Captain’s Bell

A former club captain (2001-2002), Zaramba fittingly picked overall honours by winning the newly initiated Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club, Kitante course on Saturday.

The timing couldn’t have been better for Dr Sam Zaramba to win his first major title of 2013.

Earlier he had showed his evergreen character by win three Club Nite competitions (two ladies and one men).

A former club captain (2001-2002), Zaramba fittingly picked overall honours by winning the newly initiated Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club, Kitante course on Saturday.

The 68-year-old former Director General of Health Services in Ministry of Health, playing off a superior handicap five, carded 71 nett to edge amateur star Gerald Kabuye and 19-handicapper Judith Komugisha on count-back.

“It is a wonderful feeling,” said Zaramba, who played four-over at the front nine and level at the back end of the challenging course, after picking his trophy.

“The current captain Charles (Katarikawe) is my friend and it is a great thing for me to win the Captain’s Bell as a former captain of this great club.” Zaramba also let in on how he has kept his game top notch at his age.

“I play at least three times a week whether competition or just a round with my friend,” said the retired civil servant.

Kabuye, a handicap two golfer, consolidated the top spot in the men’s Group A whereas Komugisha was unmatched in the ladies’ Group B. Isaac Nsereko and Duncan Kaggwa, both with returns of 72, were the victors in the men’s Group B and C respectively whereas Cecilia Lwanga (72) piped Katy Kabenge (74) by two strokes to the women’s Group A gong.
