KAMPALA. Duncan ‘Kikankane’ Mubiru is intent on winning the second edition of the Gorillas in the Mist Rally in Kabale, Western Uganda this weekend. Kikankane, who drives with George Ssemakula in a Mitsubishi Evo X ‘Ekisodde’, wants to improve on his second-place finish in last month’s Mbarara race.
“I have set a target this season of winning the NRC title as well performing well in the ARC events,” Kikankane, who has already registered for the Kenya Safari Rally in three weeks’ time, said. “Even in Mbarara, we were unlucky not to win after the car developed mechanical problems in the very last section but the third place gives hope. My followers and fans should expect nothing but victory.”
Mubiru made his rally debut in 2009 during the Champions Sprint in Botanical Gardens, Entebbe on Boxing Day. He drove an Evo IV, finishing second behind Shafiq Ssemujju.
Meanwhile the crew of Alwi Hassan and Enock Olinga in a Subaru N14 is provisionally set to open the route and will be followed by Omar Mayanja and Hussein Mukuye, winners of the opening round. The crew will drive an Evo X. The event has attracted 37 drivers including three from Rwanda.
