The sporting rivalry between the Arthur Blick Jr and Ali Omar families is set to dominate the second round of the Mountain Dew National Motocross Championship set for Garuga today.
The family rivalry is expected to attract big cheers in the MX85cc clash with the two leaders Ali Omar and Alistair Blick carrying their challenge from the MX65cc days, which they competed in last season. “The rivalry between Ali and Alistair is healthy for the sport as it keeps both riders on the toes and with no room to rest,” Ali Omar Snr told Sunday Monitor. He added: “It is not only the rivalry but even the level of competition in the MX85cc, MX65 and MX50cc classes is fierce.
“You look at the MX50 and there is Walid Omar, Ben Nsumba and Aslan Farooqi. There is not much difference between the three. It is similar in MX65cc; Wazir Omar, Paddy Blick and Fortune Sentamu (MX50cc -2012 champion) who has upgraded will all battle out for honours.”
Blick Jr is on the other hand looking at bright times ahead for the sport. “The level of competition from MX50-85 will give motocross a bright future. I believe those riders in the three classes will dominate the sport in the near future.”
Talking of domination, the MX1cc class which was dominated by Blick Jr for over 15 years is wide open after his retirement. Blick Jr quit competitive Motocross last season after winning a record 10 national titles.
With teenager Maxime Van Pee also absent studying abroad, it leaves two times national champion Asaf Natan (2006, 2008), Yannick Duyck, Unisan Bakunda and Yashin Bukala as the riders who will lock horns in what should be an enthralling day of competition.
Gates open at 8am and the entry fee is Shs5,000 per head.
