City Tyres to sponsor FMU awards

Kampala. City Tyres will sponsor this year’s FMU Awards scheduled for February 13 at Silver Springs Hotel, Bugolobi.
The awards will also mark the beginning of a celebration of more than 100 years of motorsport in the country.
“The awards will kick-start the FMU calendar,” FMU general secretary Raymond Kibira said during the launch at Lugogo yesteday.
“We want to open the season in a big way to promote more sponsors. We are also going to recognize the past stars as we drive into the future,” he added.
Kibira explained that the fallen greats will be honoured posthumously such as Sospter Munyegera, the first African to finish the Safari Rally.

Shs50m budget
“We have a budget for Sh50m of which FMU will contribute Sh10m.” City Tyres will buy the 60 trophies for the function. Around 300 guests have been invited for the ceremony where tables (of 10 people each) will be available for sale in three categories of gold (Sh3m), silver (Sh2m) and bronze ( Sh1m).
There will be three special awards handed over; the Shekhar Mehta (RIP) gong which will go to most successful Uganda driver, the FMU prize for best official and club sponsor and the FMU Presidential lifetime Award for the outstanding person in rally and motocross.
Mehta was a Ugandan-born Kenyan rally driver. He won the Safari Rally a record five times, including four staright triumphs.
In 1981, he finished fifth in the World Rally Championship (WRC).
