KAMPALA.

As competitors gear-up for the third round of the National Rally Championship due April 29-30, domestic Motorsport governing body FMU will have more than the usual interest in the race.

At the launch of the event held at Lugogo yesterday, the federation revealed plans to use the rally as a tune-up for the continentally recognised Pearl of Africa Rally scheduled in June.

The latter, like the Challenge Rally will consequently take place mainly in areas surrounding Kayunga District.

“We need to study the route and have it tested. The Pearl of Africa Rally means a lot to us. The feedback we received from the world governing body last year was that the roads were the worst part of the report. But the rest we scored very highly,” explained FMU president Dusman Okee.

The Challenge Rally, according to Cedric Buzabo will consequently start with a super special stage at Busiika race track before moving to the areas of Kitimbwa which is the only open road to be used in the event as well as Bbale, Nakyesa and Kitwe.

“The event is a trial of what we want to take place in June so we shall have almost 90 per cent of the rally in closed routes in the sugar plantations provided by Scoul,” Buzabo explained.
He also believes that the new approach, apart from ensuring more safety will also make it easier for fans to watch more sections in the rally.
