There are no championship points at stake for Ponsiano Lwakataka but there is certainly a score to settle with standings leader Shafik Ssemujju ahead of the ‘Battle of Champions Sprint’ at Festino City on Boxing Day next week.

“His fans confused him into thinking that he beat us at the 2010 Sprint,” George Ssemakula, Lwakataka’s co-driver said.

At that rally, Ssemujju’s fans believed he had won the sprint after beating Lwakataka in the final run although the latter was eventually declared champion. Now Lwakataka intends to put that debate to rest. “I will beat him, there is no doubt,” a self-assured Lwakataka said after the launch of the sprint on Thursday.

“There is a lane that he prefers starting with because most people think it is more difficult than the other. But I know am faster and will let him do what he likes,” he added.

When informed about Lwakataka’s comments, Ssemujju did not take them lying down. “If he thinks there is one lane I prefer over the other, I will beat him in both,” he retorted. Apart from settling his score with Lwakataka, Ssemujju will also be looking to wrap up the Sprint Championship in which he holds an eight-point lead over second-placed Fred Wampamba (31 points).

The event, though, will start with motocross free-styling with Ahmed Tamale and Fatuh Kiggundu, two of the riders that have dominated the MX2 class this season expected to thrill crowds.
