KAMPALA. The Piri Piri crew of Jas Mangat and Joseph Kamya in a Mitsubishi Evo X are determined to stop the dominance of Kenyan Manvir Baryan and his British navigator Drew Sturrock in Škoda Fabia R5 during the 20th edition of the V-Power Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally this weekend.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Kamya is confident they can stop Manvir winning back-to-back Pearl Rally to join legends Charlie Lubega (2003-04) and Riyaz Kurji (RIP), who won back- to- back 2005-06.
“We are well motivated, the car has been fixed with a new engine and only need our Piri Piri Rally team fans to come in big numbers,” he said.
He went on: “Jas (Mangat) has missed quite a number of Pearl event with other commitment but this time he is rearing to go. We want also to collect the 140 points to keep us in the hunt for the National Rally Championship (NRC).”
Top class event
Kamya also hoped the organisation of the event is top class to with the level of competition expected.
Mangat who is likely to open the route by virtual of being top of NRC standings, won the event in 2013, the ywear he was piped for the Africa title by Jassy Singh from Zambia.
Mangat, known for his competitive edge and rising to the challenge early this year came third in Kenya Safari Rally behind Kenyan duo of Carl Tundo and Baldev Chagger in Evo X’s. Forty two drivers will compete in the event. Vivo Energy under their brand Shell V-Power have fuelled in Shs110m in the event.
