What you need to know:

The medal-format tournament will see the winner crowned at 6.30 pm on the 18th green, a ceremony that will be followed by merrymaking.

KAMPALA- In the absence of defending champion Dr Sam Zaramba, the Captain’s Bell can be claimed by any of the estimated 180 golfers that have registered for the Uganda Golf Club (UGC)-organised one-day tournament today.

The St Augustine International University-sponsored annual event, held after working committees are put in place, will usher in one-year-terms for new elected Captain Henry Rugamba and Lady Captain Dr Katy Kabenge.

Zaramba, playing off handicap 5, carded 71 nett to win last year’s event on countback and his absence due to work commitments abroad has seen many seasoned golfers scent podium finishes and forthwith victory. At the helm of the title hopefuls’ list is solid single low-handicapper Fabian Rwalinda and hard-working lady left-hander Gloria Mbaguta. “I feel good about my game. I think I will bag one of the podium places,” Rwalinda said in a confident tone. His sentiment was re-echoed by Mbaguta.

Solid finish
“Practice makes perfect and I have done my bit,” she said. “But golf is a game where you cannot take things for granted I will come seeking a steady start and solid finish.”

The pair will, however, not be the only ones with a chance to win as Kabenge, too, has the potential of gate-crashing her own party together with fellow national team picks Flavia Namakula and Harriet Kitaka.

In the men’s category, Burundi Open champion Willy Kitata, national team captain Phillip Kasozi, veterans Gerald Kabuye, Joseph Mawejje and Gideon Kagyenzi will also tee off as potential favourites.
