Swimmer Ganzi Mugula will be Uganda’s overall team captain at the Commonwealth Games starting October 3 in New Delhi, India. The experienced swimmer was introduced to the travelling contingent and well-wishers at a flag-off dinner held Wednesday night at Kabira Country Club. “My job is to create a link between athletes and team managers at the Games,” Mugula said after receiving the national flag from Education and Sports Minister Namirembe Bitamazire.
“When you go to Delhi, believe in yourselves, have fun and make friends,”Mugula told fellow athletes. “Otherwise, go knock them (opponents) dead.” The first batch of the 83 (athletes and coaches) departs on Sunday and government has challenged them to put up a great show in Delhi. “Go do your best. We shall be waiting to receive gold and silver medals,” representing President Yoweri Museveni, Bitamazire, said. The Indian Community in Uganda, which organized the dinner in conjunction with Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), promised to reward medalists with cash prizes.
Gold medal winners will get Shs1m, silver medalists Shs0.5m and bronze medalists Shs0.3. “We are determined to make this a success and will continue supporting Uganda till the 2012 Olympic Games,” Indian Community member Sanjiv Patel said. Over the past few months, Patel and company have assisted UOC to raise over Shs190m to make the trip to New Delhi a success.
