Aberdeen dragging their feet over Aucho

KAMPALA- Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has promised to give Uganda Cranes midfielder Khalid Aucho “proper opportunity to show what he can do” but “there is no rush” to sign him.

Aucho travelled to Scotland last week for trials to cap a dramatic few weeks that saw the player linked with a move to giants Glasgow Rangers.

That included a public slanging match involving Aucho’s representative Geoffrey Kavemba and his Kenyan club Gor Mahia. The storm has now passed.

He eventually played in their 4-1 friendly win over Arbroath which gave McInnes a chance to watch him and give a glowing assessment.

McInnes told Evening Express: “Khalid has looked fine so far but we will take our time before making any decision about him.”

“Khalid only arrived in Aberdeen late on Friday, so only managed one training session, with the U-20 squad, before the match down at Arbroath. We are trying to arrange a closed doors game to give Khalid another run out. “He will also train with the rest of the first team squad, there is no rush.

“We had been trying for about six weeks to get Khalid over to have a look at him. He also made a lot of effort to get here, which really pleased me.

“It’s only right that we give him the proper opportunity to show what he can do, although I must add we do have other options as well.”

That nervous wait in the slaughter chamber meant that Aucho couldn’t feature in Aberdeen’s Uefa Europa League qualifying tie against Maribor last night.

This would still be a very popular move for a player who scored the winner in Cranes’ 2-1 win away in Botswana to inch closer to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

If the moves materialises, Aucho (pic below) will be third Uganda to move to a significant European side this year after Farouk Miya left Vipers for Belgian side Standard Liege.
Thereafter, former KCCA winger Moses Oloya joined Russian side Kuban Krasnodar from Binh Dong in Vietnam.
