Outgoing Uganda Golf Union (UGU) president Amos Nzeyi will be flanked by Uganda Golf Club (UGC)’s outgoing captain Charles Katarikawe, new president Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Serena Hotel Managing Director Jay Mohammed when the President’s Shield tees off this morning.
The main event, which has attracted an overwhelming number of 244 golfers, takes place at the par-72 UGC Kitante course.
“I told the club professional Sadi Atibu to make room for as many golfers so that they don’t miss out on such a good event,” said Nzeyi.
“The course will be packed but at least everyone will get a chance to play and some other golfers will tee off from the 10th tee.”
Elsewhere, Dennis Anguyo scooped the Shs10m professionals’ category of the event yesterday.
The towering professional will pick a cash purse of Shs3.8m for his two rounds of 71 and 73 whose tally of 144 helped him beat an elite field of 18 professionals by five strokes.
“These are the fruits of hard work,” said an elated Anguyo, whose two rounds were littered with 10 birdies.
“Tuesday’s round in Kakungulu was better than today’s (Wednesday). But there was a lot of pressure and that happens a lot when scores turn out like this.”
Deo Akope, who equaled the best score of the best round (73) shot by Akope rallied from fifth on Day One to finish third with an aggregate of 149.
Brian Toolit (77), Stephen Odong (77) and Godfrey Mande (78) were in the top 10 on Day One but failed to make the money cut on Day Two.
Serena have injected Shs110m into the annual event whose main objective is to give a fitting farewell to Nzeyi and usher in Kiwanuka’s era.
