KAMPALA. One month after undergoing an arthroscopic knee surgery at CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital, netballer Elizabeth Atonet can walk without crutches.
On the second bimonthly review at the Hospital yesterday, Dr Eria Stanley Lubega took her through the physiotherapy session. For about an hour, she was riding on a stationary bike; lunging and most importantly walking without crutches, with the physio emphasizing she should put more pressure on the injured leg.

And except for the sharp pain Atonet felt when stretching the left knee, she was all-smiles throughout the session. “I can’t believe I’m off the crutches,” she said happily as her mother and three-year old daughter smiled on. “God is great. You can’t imagine what I feel.”
Dr Fisher Muhumuza, who conducted her surgery, noted she is progressing well, and that the exercises will be intensified with time during the six-month recovery process.

But though medically she could be prospering, financially she is not. “I thank whoever has contributed to this struggle. I even feel humbled appealing for more help but honestly, I still have a long way to go and many bills to settle,” she told us. “I am worried about how I shall make it. I need more help.”
She is under the care of her single mother and has been surviving on handouts from well-wishers like Brig Muhoozi Kainerugaba and sports Minister Charles Bakkabulindi.
