Bangi has risen 26 places in the world badminton rankings courtesy of the 1,370 points she attained at the Cyprus Open two weeks ago.

The reigning Nile Special-Uspa Female Badminton Player of the Year was knocked out of event at the quarterfinal stage but she had already done enough to scale the heights. Bangi, who has won the Uspa accolade for four consecutive years is now ranked 186th in the world and fifth in Africa. “This is the best news of 2013,” she screamed after receiving the news from Sunday Monitor.

“It is now a challenge for me to continue working hard to better that position.” Bangi defeated Anastasia Kchatap 2-0 (21-5 21-10) in only 17 minutes, before being humbled by Belgian Marie Demy in the quarters 2-0 (21-15 21-17). Bangi and her coach William Kabindi are on a mission to silence critics that think Uganda cannot have a female badminton representative at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
“The more games I play, the better my ranking will become,” she added. “I am positive I will live to witness my Olympic dream come true.”
