After testing the Mitsubishi Evo X ‘Kisodde’on Sunday, Ambrose ‘Omunyeto’ Byona is ready to take on the big boys starting with the Jinja Rally next month. Omunyeto was in Namanve Industrial Area on Sunday testing the car.
He has upgraded from Evo IX. The Evo X was formerly of Ranjit Kuku.
Byona, who missed the opening round last month in Mbarara as he was sorting out the Kisodde, is not worried about having no points. “It was too early for me to compete in the Mbarara Rally as I had not tested the car,” Omunyeto told Daily Monitor. “However it will be worth a wait. There is a lot of difference between the two cars, the X is much quicker and lighter.”
Byona was also quick to add that he will be at a disadvantage in Jinja, as he will start with no points. But he promised to be as competitive as ever. “I will start in deficit in Jinja but will be competitive and target for my first NRC victory. So my fans should come in big numbers.”
Omunyeto started rallying in 2015 in a Mitsubishi ‘Desert Warrior’ Pajero before switching to Evo IX in 2016. Since he made his debut he has not finished below seventh.
Meanwhile, on a sad note Kenyan Rally official Ashok Bhalla, passed on yesterday following cancer of the liver. Bhalla, was a regular feature as a FAI steward during the Pearl Rally in the late 90s and early 2000s.
