Lydia Sanyu Dhamuzungu will head Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) for the next four years.
The Weatherhead player, who joined the sport in 2002, was voted into office, by Weatherhead, Simba and Rockets delegates in an open ballot contest, at the elective assembly (AGM) held at Uganda Olympic Committee offices in Lugogo.
She beat Kampala Hockey Club (KHC)’s Susan Khainza and Wananchi’s Joachim Wandera, who was also backed by Deliverance Church Uganda.
In Dhamuzungu’s campaign and victory speech, she promised to ensure “clubs rise above their rivals to grow the sport that has been struggling,” despite being in the country since 1924.
Most of the candidates were unopposed but in the other contested post of organizing secretary, a coin was tossed to elect KHC’s Saddam Hussein at the expense of Weatherhead’s Aisha Kagere.
The two drew twice in the open ballot despite Hussein having to answer to claims of fleecing the association of funds from pitch hire.
The deliberations at the AGM were generally calm but were dominated by UHA’s volatile relationship with National Council of Sports (NCS) as regards the use of the hockey pitch in Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
Outgoing chairman Dunstan Nsubuga, did not present his report but used the opportunity to award clubs and executive members he worked with during his two terms of office since 2011.
