African top seed Edwin Ekiring remains a major doubt for the Uganda International Badminton Championship that gets underway at Lugogo Indoor Stadium today.

Ekiring has unsuccessfully tried to renew his expired work permit in Holland in the past days. He also revealed to Daily Monitor during that it is too expensive for him to travel to Uganda for the annual event. “My ticket costs €800 (an estimated Shs2.8m) and I don’t have that kind of money,” cried Ekiring. “Instead I will compete in the Germany International next week because I can just take a bus there.” By press time, Tournament Director Simon Mugabi was still adamant Ekiring will make his way to Uganda later today.

Sorting out issues
“He (Ekiring) told me his work permit was expired and I wrote to the immigration office in Holland which is handling his visa issues,” explained Mugabi. “We expect him anytime from now, the good thing he is in the main draw that starts on Friday.”
